I absolutely love a morning smoothie! It is the easiest way to get a TON of phytonutrients, healthy fats, and proteins into a quick on-the-go meal. In most households, mornings are usually pretty hectic. Children are either moving slow or running around, babies are crying and adults are rushing to get everyone out the door on time. A nutrient-packed smoothie to get the day off to a healthy start is precious! It’s a perfect time saver that is also a great way to get 3-4 servings of fruits and veggies. By fueling your body with real whole food nutrition first thing in the morning, it tends to trick your body into craving other healthy foods later in the day, such as soup and a salad. In contrast, if you give your body carbs and sugar for breakfast, you are more likely to be craving a pepperoni pizza for lunch instead.
While I love experimenting with different smoothie recipes, I’d like to start you off by posting my 6am go-to smoothie:
For this recipe, you may use a regular size blender or a single serve blender:
- About 5 ice cubes (you don’t need the ice cubes if you’re using frozen fruit)
- 1 Scoop of plant protein (Click here for info on the plant protein I use and love)
- 1 handful of spinach
- 1 handful of kale
- ½ cup of your favorite fruit (fresh or frozen) (ex. small banana, pineapple chunks)
- 1 Tablespoon of coconut oil
- 1 Teaspoon of chia seeds or flax seeds (I alternate between the two)
Fill halfway with 100% fresh squeezed OJ and fill the rest of the way with water
There you go!
You’re hydrating the body with phytonutrients, healthy fats, healthy protein, and fiber all in one power-packed drink!
Don’t want to wake the kids, spouse, or house guests with your obnoxiously loud blender at 6 am? No problem. Go ahead and blend it up the night before and keep it in the refrigerator until the morning. Just shake it up and drink! Smoothies last up to 2-3 days in the refrigerator. Problem solved!
Let me know what you think of the smoothie, I would love to hear your comments!
