The Core Habits Blog

The digestive system is the control center for your entire body. If it is not functioning at its best, every body system can get thrown off balance and create all sorts of horrible problems and annoying symptoms. I’m going to share with you the #1 change I made that fixed my digestive issues for good!

But first, do me a favor……..answer these questions:

  1. Do feel bloated almost everyday?
  2. Do you have stomach pain and cramping after eating?
  3. Do you have diarrhea most days?
  4. Are you constipated? (Do you have a bowel movement everyday?- if you answer “no”, then YES you are constipated)
  5. Are you always tired?
  6. Do you have unwanted belly fat?
If you answered “yes” to 2 or more of the above questions, then I have the perfect solution for you! Or, at least a starting point to get you feeling oh, so much better!

10 years ago I would have answered “yes” to 5 out of the 6 questions. Today, I can honestly say I answer “no” to all of the above questions!

“How”, you ask? I completely healed my digestive symptoms through elimination!

The challenge, for most people, will be finding which food groups cause their digestive problems. For me it was gluten, no question. Gluten, because of how overly processed it is these days, will be the culprit for most people. Our bodies are not made to be fueled with overly processed “food”. For this reason I suggest eliminating gluten from your diet first, it is a great place to start.

Once you eliminate the source of the problem your digestive system can begin to heal. You will notice amazing things happening once you stop feeding your body gluten. Abdominal bloating will go away, stomach cramping will stop, you will have regular formed bowel movements, and that afternoon nap you take everyday….will no longer be needed!

What foods contain gluten?

Well, it is actually pretty easy. If the food label does not contain “wheat” then is usually safe to eat. Most processed, or boxed foods are out. Pasta, breads, cakes, cookies, beer are all wheat containing foods and drinks. To take it a step further any product made with barley or rye, contain gluten as well.

To make life easy I put together a list of foods that are gluten-free. Begin by cleaning out the pantry and snack cabinet. Bag up or throw away all the gluten containing foods in your house. This way there is no temptation to fall back on the gluten train. If you can completely cut out gluten (wheat) from your diet for 2 weeks, I promise you, you will feel like a new person. Many people feel better only after a few days of being gluten-free. The hard news is, if removing gluten from your diet takes away all your awful digestive issues, then just be prepared to be gluten-free forever. It is a small price to pay to feel and look better…….because yes, you will lose weight as well, no question.

Gluten-Free Quick Reference Guide:

Foods that are naturally gluten-free-

  • Meats (some lunch meats contain gluten, Boars Head sliced meats are all gluten-free)
  • Eggs
  • Cheese
  • Dairy products- yogurt, cream cheese, cottage cheese, most ice creams
  • Vegetables
  • Fruits
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Plain potato chips
  • Beans, legumes
  • Rice
  • Potatoes
  • Quinoa
  • Condiments such as mayo, ketchup, mustard, relish

This is a good place to start. Remember check the label. Most foods these days will be marked “gluten-free”. If it has the words wheat, barley or rye in the ingredients, don’t eat it!
